I Bioinformatics Workshop

The Bioinformatics Workshop kicked off yesterday, May 12, and will run until May 16 at ESTM, in partnership with Howest University of Applied Sciences (Belgium), as part of the RUN-EU initiative.

Aimed at students in the fields of biology and biotechnology, the workshop offers both theoretical and hands-on training in bioinformatics, with sessions led by ESTM faculty and international experts from Howest.

Between May 12 and 16, 2025, the Escola Superior de Turismo e Tecnologia do Mar (ESTM) of the Polytechnic of Leiria will host the Bioinformatics Workshop, an initiative promoted within the scope of RUN-EU, in partnership with the Howest University of Applied Sciences (Belgium).

Aimed at undergraduate students in Marine Biology, Marine Biology and Biotechnology, and Biotechnology, as well as master’s degrees in Aquaculture, Blue and Circular Economy, Biotechnology of Marine Resources and Quality Management and Food Safety, the workshop aims to provide a solid introduction to bioinformatics, an interdisciplinary area that is increasingly relevant in the life sciences.

The workshop’s program, which is both theoretical and practical, includes sessions dedicated to the fundamentals of bioinformatics, the exploration of biological databases, the analysis of DNA, RNA and protein sequences, as well as the use of digital tools applied to research in molecular biology and microbiology. The goal is to strengthen practical skills, stimulate critical thinking and promote autonomy in the use of bioinformatics platforms.

The training will be led by an international team composed of Maria Manuel Sampaio Cristóvão and Verónica Felício, professors at ESTM, Paco Hulpiau, research coordinator at Howest University of Applied Sciences, and Jasper Decuyper, course coordinator and professor at the same Belgian institution
